Penguin Bookcover Design

2023

One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest is a novel by Ken Kesey published in 1962. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, the narrative serves as a study of institutional processes and the human mind, including a critique of psychiatry and a tribute to individualistic principles.

Each visual style is developed after a lot of prior ideas and sketches. The process of going from sketches to the actual finished artwork was fun. I have chosen to keep different color palettes for the 3 different visual styles. Each color is chosen according to the emotions connected to the book.

Illustrative Book cover

I decided to create a very simple design that displays the key emotions of the book. A very calm approach with cool colors and a peaceful tone, this design displays both freedom and the feeling of being trapped. The barbed wire displays the emotion of being trapped, while the cuckoo displays the emotion of freedom. There is more focus on the foreground than the bird because by the end of the book, the idea of freedom is very vague.

Typographic Book cover

For this design, I decided to look at the story from the narrator's POV, which is why I have chosen a bit of a psychedelic design. According to the book, the narrator Chief Bromden suffers from paranoia and hallucinations, because of which his objectivity is somewhat compromised. The black hole at the end of the tunnel represents a fog that the narrator often refers to, it symbolizes a lack of insight and escape from reality. I have used the same grid throughout the project, but in this design, I have chosen to break the grid since this design is inspired by the nature of the narrator, and from the eyes of the narrator.

Geometric Book cover

For this design, I decided to use a very simple isometric cage, which is made by just using basic geometric shapes. The illustration is of a bird trapped in a cage, which casts a shadow that represents the nurse Ratched from the story. The bird inside the cage is also made using basic geometric shapes and is made up of 3 colors, BLUE, YELLOW, and BLACK. These colors all represent the emotions the main character displays throughout the novel. Here, the cage represents feeling trapped, and the shadow of the cage which is the nurse is directly connected since the nurse is what made the patient's life a living hell.
